Newly appointed Attorney General Loretta Lynch, following her hotly disputed confirmation process through the Senate, has gone out to make a big mark – she’s taken on FIFA and corruption. The story itself is perhaps only interesting as political and sports gossip, however it is useful as an example of the importance of cabinet in US Politics. It is so easy to find arguments against their importance (few meetings, distance from the President, lack of power, lack of accountability, etc) and the ones for cabinet often trouble students. Here we have a good example of Loretta Lynch taking on the role of the face of the investigation against FIFA in the world media. In this sense, the Cabinet is demonstrating it’s importance and power; don’t forget that as they are unelected they act on behalf of the President.
