Firstly, a reminder to all that Government and Parliament are not the same thing! Students routinely confuse the two. Parliament encompasses all 650 MPs and the House of Lords; government is just those in power.
In this example, we can see Parliament trying to carry out one of it’s key functions by holding the government to account. This harks back to the days of the MPs expenses scandal and checks put in place to prevent this from happening again. In this instance, we see not only Parliament being critical of one of these new checks, but the criticism is coming from the Standards Committee, therefore also giving evidence for the roles of committees within Parliament.
