PM & Backbenchers

Cameron’s coalition has held up remarkably well considering his party has no overall majority we know, however the rise and rise in the power of backbenchers has become a feature of his leadership (e.g. a promised referendum on EU membership in 2017). The recent events north of the border with Scottish referendum now have become the latest manifestation of backbench discontent. This article outlines the pressure Cameron is facing regarding the issue of English powers within a projected DEVOMAX framework. Yes he currently is facing down his backbenchers who are vocally calling for devolved powers for England, but the timescale of this issue may not be in his powers to control – dependent upon events next May!?

Keep your eyes on this one as it will run and run as the general election looms. For Unit 2’s PM & Executive this is relevant as it is for Unit 2’s Parliament topic..
