Despite President Obama’s promise to use executive authority to force through reform on immigration, he has now announced he will not until after the elections later this year. While immigration reform has remained high on his agenda, he has had little luck getting it through Congress and Congress themselves have failed to come to a bipartisan agreement on the matter (see earlier posts regarding the ‘Gang of 8’). This is a hot topic for the Civil Rights area of Unit 3 and Obama’s continued failure to get a law through in this matter could be seen as one of the biggest ‘elephants in the room’, especially when set against the demographic breakdown of those who voted for him – including an unprecedented level of African Americans and Hispanics.
