A useful example for the Supreme Court remains the case of Snyder v Phelps – it demonstrates that justices cannot be pigeonholed by their supposed ideology and that the Constitution is always the guiding force in decisions, even when justices find the decision this leads to unpalatable. It also highlights the process to the Supreme Court, having to go through the Kansas Supreme Court before ultimately coming to the Supreme Court.

This week, the founder and leader of the Westboro Baptist Church has died. While this in itself is not perhaps evidently useful as an example, this article does highlight the case of Snyder v Phelps and why the controversy surrounding it existed.
