Under the leaderhsip of Ed Miliband, the Labour Party today reformed the membership of unions to the party. An overwhelming majority voted in favour of removing automatic affiliation of unions and reformed leadership elections to ‘one member, one vote’ rather than the electoral college system. An interesting move which initially seem to distance the Party from their union roots, however the opposition to reforms came from ordinary members rather than the unions; this challenges the view that this is a complete reform of the link between Labour and Unions. It is also interesting that Ed Miliband has chosen to reform the leadership election method which was, largely, responsible for his own victory over his brother, David. Must know examples for the Party topic of Unit 1.
