Federalism and Parties

May 13 – Tea party groups mobilizing against Common Core education overhaul

This is quite a long article but the front page alone is very useful. It discusses the Common Core Standards – standards supported by the White House to make common reading and numeracy standards across all states in all schools. This would obviously suggest a growth in federal government and shrinking of states rights; it was, however, a bipartisan bill supported by many in Washington DC and state governors. The Tea Party is pressuring the right wing however and is beginning to change a few minds against this bill, showing the importance of factions within parties (although do not overplay the importance of the Tea Party inyour exam; loud does not mean influential!)
