With the Queen’s Speech today, many Ministers had hoped the Communications Data Bill (or ‘Snoopers’ Charter’) would be mentioned. However this is not to be; Nick Clegg has refused and there are many unhappy Tories about. A great example of a policy over which the Lib Dems and Tories have fallen out, but also of the importance of ideology to parties. The Communication Data Bill is ideologically opposed to many things that the Lib Dems naturally support so it’s no surprise they are opposed.
